I live in northern New Jersey with my wife Kim and our son, plus a balding,
forever-barking standard poodle who terrorizes our neighborhood.  I do what I
do because it lets me improve the world sometimes, like a politician can but
without taking (or dishing out) nearly as much nonsense.  I'm a big basketball
fan, and I like pro more than college because real excellence requires both
talent and effort.  I named my dog for a baseball stadium where I used to have
season tickets.  I like to argue, but not enough to use my law degree.  What I
learned from growing up one of seven children was how to stand up for myself.
What I learned from being my parents' son was how to trust myself.

The hardest thing I ever did was think clearly when I learned I had cancer.
That was way harder than simply putting up with chemo, 90 percent of which is
just showing up. The best thing I ever did was become a father to my son. The
smartest thing I ever did was marry my wife.  The one thing I can't do is fix
anything.

I should lose weight, I should write a novel, I should learn to cook.  I am
planning to begin a book, probably an epic-scale instructional guide to
repairing a barbecue grill, perhaps when I get back from the gym.
About Me

Sports fan, dad, all-round good
guy
My favorite picture of myself, taken
three weeks after I got out of chemo.
This canoe tour in Costa Rica was
the first physical thing I'd done in six
months. You don't fully know what it
means to feel alive until you've had
a close encounter with the
alternative. Sam was three--he's six
now.
